If you ask most people their "star sign," they give you their Western sun sign — Aries, Taurus, Libra. But in Jyotish, the more meaningful question is: what is your Nakshatra?
The 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) divide the zodiac into segments of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each. While the 12 signs of the zodiac are familiar categories, the Nakshatras are far more precise — and far more revealing.
What Is a Nakshatra?
The word comes from the Sanskrit na (not) + kshatra (destruction) — that which is indestructible. Traditionally, the Nakshatras were the 27 "houses" the Moon visits during its monthly journey through the sky.
Because the Moon spends roughly one day in each Nakshatra, your birth Nakshatra — the one the Moon occupied the moment you were born — is considered the most personal point in your chart. It reflects your mind, your instincts, your emotional patterns, and your deepest karmic tendencies.
Your Nakshatra also determines your starting Dasha (planetary period) — the foundational timing system of Jyotish. Two people born under the same Moon sign but different Nakshatras will have entirely different life timelines.
The Structure of Each Nakshatra
Every Nakshatra has several key attributes:
- Ruling planet (Swami) — one of the nine Jyotish planets governs each Nakshatra
- Symbol — an image that captures the Nakshatra's essence
- Deity — the divine principle the Nakshatra expresses
- Quality (Guna) — Deva (divine), Manusha (human), or Rakshasa (demonic) — reflecting the mode of action
- Motivation (Purushartha) — Dharma, Artha, Kama, or Moksha
- Pada (quarter) — each Nakshatra is divided into four 3°20' quarters, each corresponding to a sign of the zodiac

How to Find Your Nakshatra
Your Nakshatra is determined by the Moon's position at your birth. To find it, you need:
- Your birth date, time, and location
- A Vedic astrology calculator (Western astrology apps won't work — you need the sidereal Moon position)
Once you have your sidereal Moon degree, divide it into 13°20' segments starting from 0° Aries. The segment it falls in is your Nakshatra.
For example:
- Moon at 5° Aries → Ashwini (0°–13°20' Aries)
- Moon at 20° Aries → Bharani (13°20'–26°40' Aries)
- Moon at 2° Taurus → Krittika (26°40' Aries – 10° Taurus)
The Nakshatra and Daily Life
In daily Jyotish practice, the Moon's current Nakshatra (which changes roughly every day) is just as important as your birth Nakshatra.
The Panchang — the Vedic almanac — tracks the daily Nakshatra and uses it to assess the quality of each day. Some Nakshatras are considered fixed (good for permanent actions like buying property), some moveable (good for travel), some mixed, and some sharp (good for decisive actions but not auspicious beginnings).
When the daily Moon Nakshatra matches your birth Nakshatra, it is called your Janma Nakshatra day — considered a personally significant day requiring extra care or conscious intention.
The Three Nadi Groups
The 27 Nakshatras are grouped into three sets of nine, called Nadis — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These correspond to the Ayurvedic constitutional types and influence health, relationships, and compatibility assessments.
In marriage compatibility (Ashtakoot), the Nadi match is given the highest weight (8 points) and the Nadi Dosha (both partners sharing the same Nadi) is considered the most serious incompatibility.
The Nakshatras and Your Dasha Sequence
Your birth Nakshatra determines which planetary Mahadasha you begin at birth — and therefore the entire sequence of your life's chapters.
If you were born with the Moon in Rohini (ruled by the Moon), your life begins in a Moon Mahadasha. After that comes Mars, then Rahu, then Jupiter, and so on through the 120-year Vimshottari cycle.
Two people born on the same date but at different times of day may have the Moon in different Nakshatras — and therefore begin with completely different Dashas. One starts life in a Venus Mahadasha (abundance, creativity, relationships), another in a Saturn Mahadasha (discipline, delays, hard work). Their lives will unfold very differently.
A Nakshatra Is Not a Destiny
It is important to understand that a Nakshatra is not a fixed fate — it is a quality or flavour of energy. Ardra Nakshatra is associated with storms and transformation, but not every Ardra-born person lives a turbulent life. The intensity becomes the fuel for depth, research, and breakthrough.
The Jyotish tradition holds that consciousness can transcend planetary configurations. The chart shows tendencies and timing, not locked outcomes.
